Top 6 Things to Do in Venice with Family

It may be celebrated for being the perfect romantic destination for couples, but did you know that Venice is also a great place to take the kids? Here are our top suggestions for a Venice family holiday.

1. Tour the Grand Canal by Vaporetto

Topping our list of things to do in Venice with family is a Venetian classic: a trip along the Grand Canal. Getting out on the waterways is a must when you’re in Venice with kids, and they’ll love riding the vaporetto along the biggest canal of them all. Hop on by the Doge’s Palace and you’ll get a whistlestop tour of some of the city’s most impressive palazzos.

2. Visit a mask maker

One of the enduring images of Venice is scores of intricate carnival masks displayed in the windows of little mask shops tucked away on quiet backstreets. Any of them make the perfect place for the kids to try on some masks and find one to take home with them. Alternatively, for a unique insight into this inspiring craft, head to Ca ‘Macana and try your hand at decorating a mask on a mask-painting course for kids and adults.

3. Visit the Island of Murano

Home to the famous glass-blowers of Venice, Murano Island is sure to go down well with your little ones. After a fun boat trip across the lagoon, they can watch in awe as the art of glass-blowing is demonstrated at one of the workshops that produce world-famous Murano glass. It’s a great place to pick up a souvenir for you, too.

4. Grab a gelato

No Venice family holiday would be complete without ice cream, and there’s no better way to cool off in the heat of a Venetian summer than by sampling the local gelato from one of the city’s many gelaterias. This creamy Italian ice cream comes in so many flavours that the kids will love trying different ones each day.

5. Hit the beach at the Lido

Who doesn’t love a trip to the beach? Venice’s famous Lido is a great place to relax while the kids build sandcastles and paddle in the Adriatic Sea. You can hire deck chairs and parasols so that you can soak up the sun while they play.

6. Picnic in the Giardini Pubblici

Turn left at the Doge’s Palace and you’ll eventually come to the Giardini Pubblici, a beautiful park just waiting for the kids to explore. Grab some picnic treats from the nearby market on Via Garibaldi and you’re all set for a relaxed lunch beneath the shade of a tree. There’s also a playground and grotto that they’ll love running around while you sit back on a bench to enjoy the views.
