Croatia family holidays: discover our favourite destinations
If you are looking for an idea for next summer, you can consider a family holiday in Croatia as an option. With its gorgeous beaches, captivating ruins and breathtaking natural […]
Chief among the pleasant ways to pass the time of day in Umag is a stroll around the cobbled streets of its picturesque Old Town, where you’ll spot beautiful villas left over from the time when the city was ruled by the Venetians. Don’t miss the Medieval city walls, either – they date from the 10th century and they’re the town’s most famous landmark.
In the mood for learning about the area’s long history? Then head to the Museum of Umag, housed in the Medieval ‘Bishop’s Tower’, to learn about the history of the town through a series of fascinating historical and archaeological exhibitions. With artefacts ranging from Roman pots to fine art, it’s a fantastic introduction to the area’s colourful past.
Croatia’s oldest lighthouse, the 200-year-old Savudrija Lighthouse, is also the oldest on the Adriatic. It’s currently being rented out as a holiday home (take a look if you fancy staying in the lighthouse yourself), so it’s not possible to go to the top, but the sea views in the area surrounding it aren’t to be missed. It’s a particularly good spot to watch the sunset.
With its rows of shops and boats bobbing gently in the water, Umag’s atmospheric promenade is the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely walk or energising run. After you’ve walked its length and picked up a few souvenirs, head back into the Old Town to enjoy the Umag nightlife, starting with a meal washed down with a delicious glass of local wine.
As well as having lots of treasures of its own, Umag makes a great base for day trips to other Croatian towns and cities, including Porec, Rovinj and Pula. Venezia Lines operates ferries to these and other Croatian destinations, as well as day trips to the beautiful Italian city of Venice. Take a look at our article on a Venice day trip to get loads of suggestions for making the most of your day in Venice.
