Kicking off our list of the best places to visit in Rovinj, Croatia is the town’s charming and Instagram-friendly port. Rovinj’s colourful buildings are a picturesque sight nestling along the waterfront, and the port’s numerous cafes and restaurants make the perfect place to sit and relax with a glass of wine while you soak up the atmosphere.
You can’t miss the belltower of this stunning Baroque cathedral – it’s the main feature of Rovinj’s skyline. If it looks familiar, that’s because it was built by the Venetians, and it’s very similar in design to the one in St Mark’s Square in Venice. It’s well worth a look inside the Cathedral, but it’s the view from the top of the belltower, or campanile, that’s the real highlight. On a clear day, you can see as far as the snow-capped Alps.
While away a warm afternoon with a stroll around the densely-packed cobbled streets of Rovinj’s Old Town. Rovinj was actually an island until the Venetians came along and reclaimed the land around it in 1763. That’s reflected in the maze of winding streets that are a pleasure to explore and arguably one of the best things to do in Rovinj, Croatia.
Is it a fjord? Is it a canal? Despite its name, Lim Fjord gets called both these things, but in fact it’s a wide river canyon. As well as being a beautiful place to hike, cycle or take a boat tour, the area is known for the delicious shellfish farmed here – in particular mussels and oysters. Reach Lim Fjord by road or boat from Rovinj.
Founded in the 1950s, this fascinating museum tells the story of the area’s rich history through some important exhibits, as well as displaying works by local artists and sculptors. As if seeing Rovinj’s wealth of cultural treasures wasn’t enough, the whole collection is housed in a beautiful Baroque palace that’s worth a visit in itself.
When you’ve finished exploring Rovinj, you might also like to venture elsewhere in Istria and beyond – perhaps hop on the Rovinj to Pula ferry, or take a day trip with the fast ferry from Rovinj to Venice day trip.
