Those of you with a sense of adventure will enjoy the chance to explore one of the best things to do in Porec: its incredible caves. The unique Baredine Cave has been wowing visitors since it opened to the public in 1995, and you too can go in and be awestruck by the incredible spectacle of its stalagmites and stalactites. The 40-minute guided tour starts every half hour and takes you down a well-lit 300m route that takes in an underground lake as well as the cave’s other geological wonders. Look out for the unusual cave olm, a cave-dwelling aquatic salamander. Entry to the cave costs around €10 for adults and €6 for children.
If you’re travelling with the kids (by the way, have you heard about our family package offer?), they’re sure to love the fun Aquacolors Water Park, which has a whopping 13 giant water slides totalling 1km – the “greatest density of water slides in Istria”, as its website proudly proclaims. There are also swimming pools and a lazy river, making this the perfect place to cool off in the summer heat. The entry cost depends on how long you’re going for; full pricing details.
Fancy a spot of culture? Then you won’t want to miss the spectacular Basilica Eufrasiana. This group of buildings in the historic centre of Porec is on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as it’s the most complete surviving complex of its type and the site has been a centre for Christianity from as early as the 4th century. Noted for its impressive 6th century mosaics, it’s an incredibly well preserved example of early Byzantine architecture and a must-see in Porec.
Finally, an essential when you’re in Porec, Croatia: beach time! Hop on a boat over to St Nikola Island, the largest and most beautiful of the area’s islands and home to the Valamar Isabella Island Resort – the perfect place for a family holiday. While away a day on the island and see if you can find the disused lighthouse, which dates from 1402, making it one of the oldest in the Adriatic.
